BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We stock and install BFT-compatible welding and fabrication parts across Los Angeles, with most hinge, bracket, and gate frame repairs running $240 to $780 installed depending on the weld location, steel thickness, and whether we’re reinforcing or replacing the failed section. Most jobs are done same-day once we see the damage, and we quote the exact price in writing before the first spark. The typical story we hear: a gate that suddenly drags on the driveway, a hinge that rips loose from the post, or a weld that cracked clean through after years of cycles.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT gate operators (the motor that drives your gate) live inside welded steel frames, and those frames take abuse in Los Angeles that operators in other climates never see. The specific welding and fabrication work we do applies to BFT slide gates, swing gates, and overhead models: the Deimos, Phobos, Sub, and Rigel series are the ones we fabricate for most often in this city. Here’s the compatibility detail that matters: BFT slide gates ride on steel track that must be welded level within about 1/8 inch across the travel length, and the gate frame’s thickness determines what weld method we use. If you’re looking at your gate and wondering what you actually have, look for the BFT serial plate on the operator housing, then check your gate frame: most residential BFT gates in LA are 14-gauge or 12-gauge steel tube, and we match that exactly rather than guessing. On the OEM question: BFT doesn’t sell pre-fabricated gate frames in standard sizes, so nearly every frame repair is custom fabrication. For the parts that do come from BFT directly (hinge plates, catch brackets, track supports), we use OEM when it’s the smart call and quality American-made aftermarket steel when it out-specs the original, which happens more often than you’d think on older BFT installs.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • Gate drags or scrapes on one side. A cracked weld at a hinge or a sagging frame drops the gate an inch or more, and the motor now fights gravity every cycle. That extra load is what kills BFT operators early.
  • Visible rust bleeding from a joint. LA’s coastal air, especially anywhere west of the 405, works into unsealed welds and turns a hairline crack into a structural failure in about two rainy seasons.
  • A hinge point that clicks or pops when the gate moves. The weld isn’t holding anymore, the gate is shifting on the bolts, and every open-close cycle is chewing the hole bigger.
  • Gate frame wobbles when you push on it by hand. A properly welded BFT frame should feel solid, no flex. Movement means a weld separated somewhere, usually at a corner post or mid-rail seam.
  • Operator runs fine but gate lurches or binds mid-travel. The motor’s not the problem, the warped or cracked frame is. Welding the frame true fixes the bind, and a new motor won’t.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, expect the following installed ranges for BFT welding and fabrication work:

  • Single hinge re-weld or reinforcement: $180 – $340
  • Gate frame crack repair (grind, weld, gusset): $260 – $520
  • Replace a rusted gate frame section: $380 – $780
  • New BFT slide gate track weld-up and leveling: $400 – $900
  • Full gate frame fabrication to fit an existing BFT operator: $1,100 – $2,600

The range comes down to steel thickness, how much grinding and prep the old metal needs, and whether we’re working at ground level or on a ladder. Every quote includes the labor, the steel and weld materials, cleanup, and a written warranty on the weld itself. We don’t do open-ended hourly welding. Cole Rafferty’s rule from day one: write the price down first. Everything else follows from there.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do the inspection part yourself: push on the gate, look for rust trails at the joints, and listen for pops when it moves. That tells you something’s wrong. The actual welding is a different story. Gate frames under tension can shift when a cracked weld is cut out, and a gate that drops while you’re under it is a genuinely dangerous situation. We’ve also seen DIY welds on BFT gates fail within months because the steel wasn’t prepped or the weld didn’t pen the full joint. If you’re seeing a crack in the frame, call us at (828) 426-7081 instead of firing up a borrowed welder. We’ll look at it, give you a written price, and if it’s something you can honestly handle yourself, we’ll tell you that too.
